Product Review: Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant

I have a lot of love for Good Clean Love. A company that specializes in aloe-based lubes, Good Clean Love refuse to use petrochemicals, parabens, or synthetic glyerin in their products. Instead, they rely primarily on organic aloe leaf juice with a low micro variety which is then pasteurized to remove any harmful bacteria. ‘Aloe -based lube?’ you ask, ‘Don’t you mean water-based lube?’

No. I do not.

Perhaps one of the most admirable things about Good Clean Love is that they’ve decided to break the mold and proudly produce aloe-based lube that functions similarly to water-based lubricant. ‘Break the mold’ being quite literal here.

As Good Clean Love explain themselves:

It’s important to us to offer a water-based lubricant. We would love to offer you a 100% perfect, preservative-free water-based lubricant, but we also have to be realistic: water-based products can easily become a hotbed for mold, mildew and bacteria, which is something that we don’t want a single one of our customers to come into contact with, ever. We want to offer you the healthiest natural lubricant we can, and bacterial infections are not healthy! The answer? We start with a low-micro variety of aloe, and pasteurize it so that we have the cleanest possible base to work from.

The Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant is just one of the many lubricant available in this range, and it appealed to me primarily for one reason—cinnamon. I love it.

The Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant

A lubricant playing with one of my favourite spices is always going to catch my attention and the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant combined cinnamon and vanilla to add a ‘spicy-sweet scent’ to their product.

Sometimes a sachet is the wisest option when exploring new lubes.
Sometimes a sachet is the wisest option when exploring new lubes.

The lubricant itself comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and I was provided with some sachets for review, so let’s take a moment to talk about this.

The sachets themselves are incredibly slender and work well to help easily transport a reasonable amount of lubricant for some on-the-go adventures or the easy application of a menstrual cup, kegel beads, or an anal toy. This sachet can be opened with relative ease and allows for the lubricant to pour out effectively. It has a swift and efficient ‘Directions for Use’ section, which should help anyone new to lubricant dive right in, and is generally a nice way to sample this lubricant.

For comparison, here is what a larger tube should look like.
For comparison, here is what a larger tube should look like.

And I do recommend getting a sampler sachet of this lubricant because the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant is unlike a lot of other lubricants while also managing to feel very typical.

Generally I like to consider lubricants in terms of scent, taste, and consistency before moving on to experience. But, for me, testing the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant was an experience in every sense of the term and at every stage of the process.

The first aspect of testing the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant, the scent test, was meant with a rather perplexing revelation that this lubricant—which sells itself on having a spicy-yet-sweet cinnamon and vanilla scent actually has an incredibly subtle scent that can only really be detected when held close to the nose.

Admittedly, this scent is very akin to a cinnamon churro but its sweetness definitely take precedence over the spicy ayurvedic cinnamon scent that I have become acclimatized to thanks to concoctions such as Yogitea and, more recently, spiced chai.

I can certainly understand the desire to stick to a more saccharine scent when appealing to a larger audience, but the sugary sweet aroma of the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant is just a bit too cloying for me, making me rather grateful that the scent is very subtle.

But, still, for a product focusing on aroma I really did expect that aroma to be more noticeable rather than an after-scent which will appeal to those who like their cinnamon in creamy pastries.

Taste-wise I was also expecting the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant to actually taste of the vanilla and cinnamon that inspired its conception (although I was aware that this may not have been the case). Instead the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant has a sweetness to it followed by a rather metallic tang that is probably brought about by the aloe. This sweetness, again, tastes a bit like a pastry or, more accurately, a cake batter and is slightly reminiscent of licking the bowl in between baking ambitions.

Because of this the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant is suitable for oral use, but it’s certainly not designed for it and the focus is truly on how this lubricant smells and performs rather than the taste it can offer.

This lubricant certainly works well with sex toys.
This lubricant certainly works well with sex toys.

Speaking of performance, Good Clean Love have an incredibly impressive track record. Their product has literally been part of a scientific study, in which it was found to be effective when providing a ‘buffer gel’ to help reduce the transfer of HIV and was much less likely to cause bacterial vaginosis than competitor brands (something that surprises no one in the sex positive community but which is so important in terms of sharing info about safer sex practices).

Upon these findings, instead of claiming to be the god of all lubricants (not to name names or anything) Good Clean Love then asked themselves how they could improve, and this dedication is shown in their products.

I can certainly see how the study that used Good Clean Love would use the term ‘buffer’ in relation to this lubricant. It is a very nice, thick, and almost gel-like lubricant. This is something I attribute to the aloe-base of the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant, which offers itself much more to a goopy consistency than aqua alone.

Yet, despite this, the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant actually feels very light, refreshing, and just plain wet during use. It certainly provides the promised buffer when used with sex toys and, or during penetration, but it also feels rather unremarkable in many ways.

This could be seen as a bad thing but it’s actually ideal.

After all, lubricant on a fundamental level is supposed to provide lubrication. Its aim is to hydrate without being intrusive one way or another.

The Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant achieves this goal and manages to do so without any irritation or overwhelming presence. A review on the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant page suggests that for some this lubricant could cause a stinging sensation. This was my experience with a former Good Clean Love product but I experienced no averse effects with the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant, so I’m willing to say that this comes down to your own skin sensitivities and is, sadly, part of the gamble people with sensitive skin take on a daily basis. All the more reason to buy some samplers first. Better safe than sorry!

Final Thoughts

So, overall, was the Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant the rich and smooth cinnamon explosion I had hoped for? No. Not at all. But I don’t hold it against this lubricant.

At the end of the day this lubricant is objectively exceptional. It’s ingredients are free from anything majorly harmful or irritating, it works with the body, rather than against it, and it manages to be part of a good, clean, love-making session without screaming about its achievements.

For this I yet again tip my hat to Good Clean Love, even though I find myself using product with a certain amount of unexpected apathy.

The Good Clean Love Guilty Pleasure Organic Personal Lubricant is simply a very good lubricant which can be relied on and has a nice, gentle aroma, and that simplicity really isn’t a bad thing.
