Toy Review: The Rocks Off Ruby Glow 10 Settings Vibrator

It’s a very rare treat for me to actually use the toy that I’m reviewing during the actual writing process for the review itself, but this is exactly what the Rocks Off Ruby Glow Vibrator was designed for. The Rocks Off Ruby Glow was designed by the erotic writer Tabitha Rayne, who wanted something that she could enjoy while writing her work. The resulting saddle-style vibrator was something she thought would appeal to others and, luckily for us, Rocks Off agreed.

If there’s one thing I can say about the Ruby Glow it’s that this is a very unique-looking vibrator, so much so that it was nominated for Most Innovative Product of 2016 at the ETO shows. It also came in second place in Good Housekeeping’s ranking of annual vibrators and has been featured on national television here in the UK.

Overall it’s fair to say that this ruby saddle has received quite a bit of buzz (pun certainly intended) but, much as with any non-conventional toy, it can be hard to tell if this toy will work for you. Well allow me to share my experiences with the Ruby Glow with you as I ride this toy throughout the entire duration of this review.

The Rocks Off Ruby Glow 10 Settings Vibrator

The Ruby Glow vibrator may be rather non-conventional but its function is pretty straightforward to describe. This is a toy that users essentially sit down upon and then ride and grind up against in order to achieve satisfaction. The Ruby Glow is a non-penetrative toy and so it can be used both clothed and naked (perfect for erotic writers and frustrated sex toy reviewers such as myself). This lack of penetration also makes the Ruby Glow a great choice for anyone who appreciated the motion of thrusting and grinding to achieve orgasm but dislikes penetration or penetrative toys.

The Ruby Glow is a different spin on both sex toys and saddles (something I'm sure we can all take a moment to appreciate).
The Ruby Glow is a different spin on both sex toys and saddles (something I’m sure we can all take a moment to appreciate).

As Tabitha herself described, the Ruby Glow has a ‘saddle-like’ design, in which there is a raised front and back section with a dip in the middle. This is designed to hug up against the vulva when seated, making for a comfortable ride. The front section is narrower with a delicate rippling texture, perfect for direct stimulation of the vulva, whereas the back section is larger and more bulbous, providing a more general sense of breadth.

The controls for the Ruby Glow are sensibly placed at the front of the toy and yet I still find them to be mildly confusing. This is because the vibrations that control the back of the saddle are at the top of where you would naturally press whereas the vibrations for the front section of the saddle are lower down underneath the top button. This strikes me as odd, as I assume most users would press for clitoral stimulation (and thus the top button) first but the controls are in fact structured in the exact opposite manner. I’ve had the Ruby Glow for a while now and I admit that this still trips me up from time-to-time.

The Ruby Glow retails at around £39.99 (but is currently on sale over at LoveYourSelf Online for £34.99) which is very affordable for a vibrator if its size and purpose. Rocks Off are generally known for their well-built and affordable products, so this doesn’t surprise me, but it’s still a very nice aspect of the Ruby Glow, especially as this vibrator is essentially the brain child of a member of the adult community. Seeing someone’s personal dream become a reality that most people can afford is pretty damned amazing, as self-starters are always a trial that typically comes with added costs.

While the Ruby Glow is not in the fully-blown luxury category of vibrators it is still incredibly high-quality and its features reflect this. The Ruby Glow is splash-proof, comes in very nice packaging which is good for gift giving, and is battery powered (batteries included). The Ruby Glow also comes with a download code for some free erotic stories which you can read while enjoying your new toy.

The Ruby Glow is also has a silicone surface, making it non-porous, phthalate-free, and completely body-safe. This silicone is nice and smooth but not in a manner that makes stroking it irresistible. It’s a pleasant matte surface which offers a good amount of traction during use and lubes up well but is not what I’d call exceptional (not that it has to be in order to remain effective).

Perhaps one of the best choices made by Rocks Off and Tabitha when executing the Ruby Glow was the inclusion of dual-motors which can be controlled independently. This allows users maximum control and creates a very fun scenario for pattern-lovers—who can experience two different patterns from the front and back simultaneously. The front motor for the Ruby Glow (which stimulates the vaginal mound and clitoris) produces a gentle buzzing vibration which is mid-level at maximum intensity and feels somewhat muffled during solo use. The back saddle has a higher pitched buzz to it and a humming undertone as it also provides mid-level strength.

None of this sounds particularly exciting on its own but when both of these motors are turned on they suddenly come to life—bounding off of each other and vibrating throughout the entire area of the groin to create a buzzing sensation that almost echoes throughout my genitals in a pulsating ripple of enjoyable sensation. Granted, it’s not enough for me (power queen that I am) to personally orgasm from using the Ruby Glow alone, but I don’t really see the purpose of this toy as tipping me over the edge anyway.

No amount of added texture is going to compensate for the lack of oomph when it comes to getting me off.
No amount of added texture is going to compensate for the lack of oomph when it comes to getting me off.

Perhaps appropriately, when I personally use the Ruby Glow I approach it much as I would erotica. I sit with it, get a sense of it, and use it to build me up to a point where I can wait no longer before grabbing for my go-to toys and finishing off strong. For me the Ruby Glow is the perfect primer toy and it performs this task with absolute ease. All I need to do to enjoy the Ruby Glow is simply sit down and enjoy the ride, and the Ruby Glow is happy to accommodate my needs.

The Ruby Glow is also fantastic as what I would consider to be a highly compact portable fucking machine too which makes it great for partnered use. Much as with a Sybian or a sex chair, users can perch down on top of the Ruby Glow and begin to ride it while their partner watches. Because the Ruby Glow is so small compared to, say, a Sybian it’s also possible for couples to take this anywhere with them (even on holiday) and share such an experience wherever they go. The perfect portable sex machine for creating an erotic experience and setting the mood for the rest of the evening.

Practically speaking the Ruby Glow also has great applications for those can’t use penetrative toys, cam girls who want to put on a saddle show, people who prefer reaching orgasm while seated, and those with mobility issues. In fact I absolutely adore the Ruby Glow’s tagline because it’s inclusive of all of these groups—‘Pleasure for the seated lady’—love it!

And, of course, if you prefer gentler or buzzier vibrations then you’ll probably have more luck tipping over the edge with the Ruby Glow than I did. For now, though, I’m happy with what the Ruby Glow personally provides me and feel like it’s still a wise investment for anyone who does wish to engage in some seated exploration. If, however, orgasms are your main goal and you know that you require oomph and rumbly vibrations then the Ruby Glow might be worth giving a miss, at least for now.

In terms of other downsides I actually only had three, but I personally feel like they’re more than just nit-picks.

The first is that the Ruby Glow follows the strange trend of some recent toys in that it’s continuous vibrations start on the highest intensity and then get gentler as you push the button. No. Why? Why is this a thing? This is the opposite of what I want when I’m using a toy. I want to build up to the vibrations, not downgrade. I mean there’s a reason the phrase ‘turn it up and notch’ exists. No one wants to ‘turn it down a notch’ unless they’re having a freak out like me over this trend.

…Okay maybe I do need to turn it down a notch but you catch my drift.

The second issue with the Ruby Glow is that this is not a quiet toy. Even when perched on the Ruby Glow it makes a fair amount of noise and I can imagine that in a quiet house people could still detect it, even behind closed doors. This is a bit of a bummer because otherwise the Ruby Glow could be a fantastic vibrator for students living in Uni dorms—especially those in LDRs, who might appreciate a toy that allows them to put on a show while seated, and any student going through a stressful deadline who needs to pause for some self-lovin’. As it stands your level of discretion will have to be carefully considered before buying this vibe.

And, finally, while the Ruby Glow has undoubtedly done its best to accommodate users of all shapes and sizes it should be noted that not every body will find the Ruby Glow to be a comfortable seat for them. With its 6 x 17cm measurements larger individuals may have a particularly difficult time with the Ruby Glow and feel like the vibrations and toy simply cannot accommodate their fabulous frames. I know I would have been worried about it myself back when I could openly identify as a BBW.

Final Thoughts

Outside of these issues the Ruby Glow is a fantastic and brilliantly unique vibrator with a lot of potential for many different people. When you hear the term ‘seated lady’ it’s hard to initially think of who the Ruby Glow will appeal to, but start thinking of what this toy has to offer and suddenly a whole world of possibilities opens up to you.

Sadly this is a world that I cannot enjoy at its fullest, as mid-level vibrations (even if they were more rumble than buzz) are never going to bring me to climax, but that doesn’t mean that other users won’t mind the exciting reverberation of these two motors working off of each other to be to their liking.

Overall I enjoyed the Rocks Off Ruby Glow Vibrator and can certainly see its appeal. Down the line I would love to see a rechargeable version of it made available, which focuses more on strength and rumbly vibrations but for now the Ruby Glow has proven to be a very well made toy which lives up to its hard-earned buzz.
