Toy Review: The Meo Dog Balls Cock Ring

There’s cat people. There’s dog people. Then there’s puppy people.

Let’s get educational.

What Is Puppy Play?

A type of roleplay-heavy BDSM, puppy play is a scenario (or lifestyle, for some) in which one person takes on the role of a puppy dog while the other becomes the owner/handler/trainer and acts as such. For some this can involve sexual activities, for others it’s just as simple as letting go of their responsibilities and getting some cuddles. After all, that’s what good pups deserve.

Much like other forms of Dom/Sub play, puppy play places a lot of focus on release and freedom. In this dynamic the puppy typically allows themselves to shed their inhibitions, connect with a more animalistic persona, and embrace the situation with a sense of fun and play. The handler takes on the role of caretaker for the puppy (or, in the case of a trainer, runs them through some training and gets them to perform tricks).

Animal roleplays aren’t uncommon in the world of adult erotica. Bunny girls are a prime example of the animal element being slipped into mainstream erotica (and, of course, sexual roleplays involving little red riding hood and the big bad wolf also have an appeal). Wolves in general have most likely enjoyed a boom in kink culture recently, as #TeamJacob fans safely fulfil their fantasies in the privacy of their own homes. However, unlike these forms of sexual roleplay, pups don’t always like it ruff.

In fact, part of the reason why puppy play is considered so popular and easy to get into is because, compare to some other Dom/Sub dynamics, puppy play is actually a rather gentle form of BDSM. You wouldn’t train a real dog (sometimes known in the community as biopups or biocanines) by being violent to them and so handlers are rarely harsh or punishing to their pups. Of course you do get pups that would prefer to play a bit rougher, but it’s not necessarily the norm.

Due to its playful nature, there aren’t really any hard and fast rules for puppy play. One thing I want to make crystal clear though is that pups and their owners are not attracted to dogs. Puppy play is not bestiality and does not condone it at all. Just like donning a corseted bunny suit doesn’t mean you endorse sex with rabbits, engaging in puppy play does not encourage sexual actions with biological dogs.

The Meo Dog Balls Cock Ring

Now that you’re up to speed about the bare bones of puppy play let’s dive into the review. The Meo Dog Balls Cock Ring is one of many accessories that pups can use during a play session to add a sexual element. Some other items might include a butt plug tail, or a bone-based gag, but, for those hardcore pups and handlers out there, the Meo Dog Balls Cock Ring provides a much more extreme accessory.

Multiple sizes for different breed and occasions.
Meo offers multiple sizes for different breed and occasions.

Available in a variety of sizes, the Dog Balls Cock Ring makes sure that a pup looks like the dog’s bollocks by adorning them with a practical cock ring which will increase the size of their penis and allow them to have longer, strong sessions (in theory, at least). The sizes available are as follows—40mm, 45mm, 50mm, 55mm—and depending on the size you get depends on whether or not you can double up your Dog Balls Cock Ring as a cock & balls ring instead.

The Meo Dog Balls Cock Ring is made from chunky aluminium, which is non-porous, phthalate-free, easy to clean and completely body-safe. Whether it’s play-safe, on the other hand, is up to you.

Metal Cock Rings 101

Before we move on I feel like it’s important to touch upon some basic safety advice for metal cock rings.

Some people completely advise against the use of metal cock rings or, at the very minimum, only condone them for experienced cock ring users and there’s certainly logic behind this.

Because a metal cock ring is made from a rigid material it’s a lot harder to put it on and (more importantly) remove it when needed. If a metal cock ring is the wrong size or is left on for too long then it can cause some serious pain or swelling, require an embarrassing trip to A&E or even cause long term damage. Because of this it’s very important to decide whether or not you want to try a metal cock ring before making a purchase. It should never be a spontaneous purchase.

This isn't a spur of the moment kind of sex toy.
This isn’t a spur of the moment kind of sex toy.

If you’re planning on using a metal cock ring then awareness is crucial. Measure your shaft and make sure you get the right size for yourself. Use a good lubricant (silicone is preferred) and try it out on your own at first. Take the time to familiarize yourself with how it makes you feel and note if there’s any major change or loss of sensation. Remove it if you think that anything is wrong and discontinue use immediately.

If you’re using your cock ring as a cock and ball ring then you need to factor in for the additional width and consider the safety of your testes. Ideally you should make sure that there is enough room for a single testicle to slide through unhindered and putting the ring on should be done without an erection. A lot of patience may be required here as you slide one testicle through the ring and then begin to gently navigate the other through. For the penis you may need to try and flatten it a bit before guiding it through the ring and pulling it through.

Once the cock and ball ring is on repeat the above process: taking time to see how it feels, notice any changes and figure out if there is any pain. It’s a lot easier to figure out if something might be wrong when you’re focused as opposed to being distracted during sex.

While this may all sound intimidating at first (believe me, it did for us) a lot of users have a very positive experience with metal cock rings and swear by them. Just make sure that you do your research ahead of time and you may also find metal cock rings a great addition to your sex life.

Our Experiences

Yes, I was definitely daunted by the prospect of using a metal cock ring, but that apprehension was easily drowned out by my intense urge to explore puppy play. As soon as I saw the collection of different rings that Meo supplied me with (to try different methods of use) I was immediately impressed.

These cock rings are great for a bit of temperature play.
So cool to the touch that they might make your pup whimper.

The metal used for this cock ring isn’t entirely polished, but it’s not rough either. Instead it has the perfect level of surface texture to allow for comfortable use and a pleasant tactile experience. The metal itself is nicely heavy weight and feels freezing cold when first brought into play (though it will warm slightly with a person’s natural body heat).

Because this ring is metal it does permit users to dabble in sensation play—warming or cooling it as they desire. The ring retains its chosen temperature well, though I admit to preferring its natural temperature over anything else. Mr. Peaches, on the other hand, is a wimp when it comes to the cold and found the Dog Balls Cock Ring’s natural coolness to be a bit of a turn off. Different folks, different strokes, as it were.

The feature that makes this cock ring so good for puppy play, namely its engraved ‘puppy’ tag, was wonderfully produced and it really appealed to me. I think I actually let out an audible squeak of approval when I first saw it, and then another as it dangled from underneath Mr. Peaches’ balls. In fact the jingling element of this cock ring is a very welcome auditory addition to play. Hearing your puppy jingle its way around the room, or hearing the tag during sex, adds a fun element to sex which can sometimes be neglected. How many toys actively engage our sense of hearing? Sure it can be a by-product of some but it rarely takes center stage. I have to say I liked it.

More than just an aesthetic detail, it seems.
More than just an aesthetic detail, it seems.

We used the Dog Balls Cock Ring two different ways (and used two different measurements for this, of course). One of these ways was as a cock and ball ring and the other was as a standard cock ring.

After a fair amount of testing I have to say that we both preferred using it as a cock ring, although Mr. Peaches disliked it generally.

My reason for preferring (okay, adoring) its use as a straight-up cock ring were primarily linked to sensation. Used this way Mr. Peaches felt substantially firmer, noticeable larger and seemed to last longer, with a longer finish at the end. Not only did his enhanced firmness mean that his coronal ridge stimulated my G-Spot more but the puppy tag on the outside kept touching against my vulva, providing an additional sensation which was fleeting yet irresistible. It’s probably the closest I’ve come to liking a sensation that had a pattern (or is it rhythm?) to it. Bravo Dog Balls Cock Ring.

But, alas, my enhanced experience came at a steep price. For Mr. Peaches the endurance he was endowed with came with another unwanted side-effect: loss of sensation. For the most part Mr. Peaches found that the metal rings just dulled the sensation for him too much compared to other cock rings. He was using the metal rings safely, he just didn’t appreciate their cool touch and degree of sensual deprivation. I believe he also found the jangling to be distracting, which is perfectly reasonable.

Final Thoughts

Overall the design of the Meo Dog Balls Cock Ring is rather simplistic and, as such, there aren’t really any objective downsides to it. However, as I’m sure you’ve probably gathered, there are a lot of variables in personal preference when it comes to a cock ring like this.

Personally I think this ring would make a great purchase for someone who has experience with metal cock rings and is interested in the puppy play scene but I probably wouldn’t recommend it to a metal cock ring novice. There are simply too many variables at play which make it more of an advanced item.

Because Mr. Peaches disliked the Dog Balls Cock Ring we don’t use ours regularly, but I would love to see Meo stock a silicone or TPR alternative for those of who like the roleplaying element but dislike the material. Puppies come at all experience levels after all!

If you’ve read this review and you think this cock ring is for you then, by all means, go for it! Meo is a fantastic company and these cock rings are very good quality for money. You’d be barking mad not to take advantage of that.
