Product Review: The JimmyJane Afterglow Massage Candle (Dark Vanilla)

Having tested my apprehension of needles with a 7-row pinwheel and conquered my fear of electrocuting myself it seemed to me like there wasn’t much more in the world of adult products left for me to fear. However I was wrong in that respect.

Massage candles have always intrigued me. I’m a big fan of massage oils in general and the premise of a candle that melts into luscious oils was one that I warmed to quickly. Yet despite my eagerness fears soon crept in when I got my first massage candle (kindly provided by Desires of the I.D. in exchange for an honest review). Was this gunna hurt? How hot does the wax get exactly? What if it burns me?

Thankfully my experiences with the Jimmyjane Afterglow Massage Candle (Dark Vanilla) reassured everything I had already learnt from my time with electrastim. Just because a product sounds scary doesn’t mean it’s going to be. In fact it can lead to some very arousing sensations.

The JimmyJane Afterglow Massage Candle (Dark Vanilla)

The JimmyJane Afterglow Massage Candle (Dark Vanilla) is one of many scented massage candles that JimmyJane produces—each with their own delicious scent. The general premise of a massage candle is that the candle has a low melting point which allows it to melt readily and stay at a temperature which is body-safe. Massage candles are usually made out of natural waxes and oils too, giving them a silky smooth feeling.

The JimmyJane Afterglow Massage Candle adds a slice of luxurious intimacy to any massage session.

When it comes to the JimmyJane Massage Candle soya bean oil and shea butter make up some of the primary ingredients, while additional ingredients such as jojoba, aloe vera and vitamin E help to nourish and enrich the skin. The oil used is completely body-safe—being free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, petrochemicals, or animal products. The candle also hasn’t been tested on animals for added reassurance and the wick is made from all natural cotton.

Because this candle has such enriching ingredients in it the JimmyJane Afterglow Candle can also be used for general skincare or even as a source of aroma for a room, however we all know that an intimate massage sounds like much more fun. Still it’s worth noting that the JimmyJane Massage Candle is not a lubricant and is only meant for external use.

Each JimmyJane Afterglow Massage Candle is infused with a rich scent which is meant to work as an effective aphrodisiac. In this instance my candle was Dark Vanilla. This scent provides a rich vanilla aroma which is sweet but not sickly (in fact I’d go as far as to call it smooth in smell) and is very pleasant. The richness of the vanilla is accompanied by a deep, almost roasted undertone which smells a little like smoky wood. This scent is one that I adore however Mr. Peaches did find it to be a bit overwhelming so if you’re sensitive to scents then these candles might be a bit too much for you.

In order to use the JimmyJane Massage Candle all you need to do is cut the wick appropriately (to about ¼”) before lighting the candle. For the best results you’ll want to leave it for about 45 minutes before blowing out the candle and drizzling the wax over your partner’s body or your own. The container for the JimmyJane Massage Candle is made of porcelain and has a little spout on one side to make pouring easier (a very nice touch, I feel). A single candle can burn for approximately 32 hours total.

As I said before I was initially very apprehensive about having the melted oil from the JimmyJane Massage Candle poured on my body. So much so that I actually chickened out and used it on Mr. Peaches first. -Cluck-Cluck- This was still a great experience though as it allowed me to get a hands on feel for the massage candle in action (pun definitely intended).

Once poured onto the skin the oil from this candle takes on a very smooth but still rather substantial feel to it. In many ways it actually felt like a cream-oil hybrid at first as I worked it into the skin. Yet as I continued to use it I found that the oil worked into the skin well and allowed for a silky, luxurious massage.

Come my turn I was still hesitant despite having used the candle myself (what can I say? I’m a scaredy cat). However, as soon as the wax was poured onto my body my worries melted as readily as the oil from the candle had. It was (as my logical brain knew it would be) merely warm, lukewarm even, and not at all dislikeable. Spreading this oil across someone’s skin is its own treat but having it spread over you is a different experience altogether. It’s very indulgent, incredibly intimate, and very moving in its own way.

When it comes to building up a bond intimate massages are a winner and when trust and sensation play come into the equation then things get even more intense. I loved every moment with my JimmyJane Massage Candle and I would recommend that anyone with an interest give one a try. It’s really not as scary as it may seem.

After getting my massage it’s also worth noting that my skin was silky smooth and glistening with the oil—a definite turn on for any actions that might come after the foreplay stage.

Unfortunately every product has its downsides and the JimmyJane Afterglow Massage Candle is no exception.

While I did like the feeling of the massage oil I did feel like it was a bit too thick for my personal preference and would have preferred it to have been a bit smoother.

As I’ve stated before Mr. Peaches also found the scent to be incredibly overpowering, which can be a turn-off for some.

When pouring the oil you’re liable to get some of it dripping down the porcelain and this means you have to clean the side of the candle holder (which can get sticky)  so the candle isn’t entirely maintenance-free either. If you don’t cut the wick then you may also get soot in your oil, which isn’t ideal.

Massages can get messy.

Most people will find that they also need to shower the oil off afterwards and, since it takes 45 minutes to reach its ideal state, this candle isn’t exactly the best item for a quickie.

Even after a shower I found the candle’s scent remained on my body (despite a thorough scrub). This didn’t deter me but, again, it might annoy anyone who is sensitive to odours or needs to banish the scent in a rush.

A lot of these points, though, are exactly what you’d expect from a massage candle. Because of that I feel like they’re more general points rather than personal grievances against the JimmyJane Afterglow Massage Candle.

If there is anything to say about this candle it is that it does stay rather lukewarm at all times so if you’re looking for a more extreme sensation then this might not be the candle for you.

Final Thoughts

Overall I was incredibly happy to find that the JimmyJane Afterglow Massage Candle (Dark Vanilla) met all of my expectations and banished any fears that were looming in my mind. The oil was a delight to apply and the scent that it provided really added to the experience.

If you want to spend some intimate time exploring sensations (or simply relaxing) with your partner then the JimmyJane Massage Candle is a great addition to your bedroom activity. Just be sure that strong scents aren’t a mood killer for you and you should be fine.
